Optus Plans to Extend 3G Wireless
Network in Australia
Press Release -
January 31, 2007
Australian cell phone provider, Optus is planning to expand its 3G
wireless data network into rural areas, according to the company’s
CEO, Paul O’Sullivan.
Optus hopes to cover approximately 96% of Australia’s population with
its extended network, and will own all new facilities exclusively, the
company said in a statement. It will continue to co-won its urban 3G
networks with Vodafone.
Although the bulk of Optus’ new network will operate in the 1200-MHz
frequency, the company is also considering using the 900-MHz range for
certain small towns and rural communities.
“The cost of the network roll-out is estimated at up to A$800 million
if it is built entirely at 2100MHz, and around A$500 million if 900MHz
proved feasible,” O’Sullivan explained. “This would be funded out of
Optus’ normal annual capex program over the three year build period.”
