Canadian telecom equipment maker, Nortel Networks, has teamed up
with Toshiba to jointly develop mobile WiMAX base stations for the
Japanese and global markets.
Toshiba will develop radio modules for the base stations, while Nortel
will be responsible for digital modules.
“The initial focus will be on the joint development of WiMAX products,
with Toshiba engineers contributing experience and expertise in radio
technologies to Nortel’s WiMAX solution,” commented Shunichi Kimura,
the CEO of Toshiba’s Social Infrastructure Systems Company. “In
addition to Japan, there are many countries around the world that
would benefit from the implementation of WiMAX technology and this
cooperative effort will make a significant contribution to bringing
WiMAX solutions to these markets quickly and cost effectively.”
Nortel and Toshiba both participated in the Japanese government’s
next-generation wireless trials, successfully completing WiMAX trial
provisions in the Tohoku region between December 2006 and March of
this year
