Nokia Expects Big Growth in Wireless
Web and Multimedia

Finnish cell phone manufacturer, Nokia, predicted last week that
portable multimedia devices with built-in internet connectivity would
be one of the industry’s largest future growth markets.
“In emerging markets, we see that more people are accessing the
internet for the first time via their mobile device rather than on a
PC and we aim to be at the forefront of making that happen,” said
Nokia CEO, Olli-Pekka, in a speech at the recent Consumer Electronics
Show in Las Vegas.
Pekka noted that so called “converged devices,” which combine basic
voice functionality with features like mobile video and web surfing,
are growing in popularity at a breakneck pace.
Nokia alone shipped a total of 40 million such devices in 2006, the
company reports, and hopes to continue riding this growing wave by
integrating its products with web communication services like Yahoo
Instant Messenger and Skype.
