Indian Telecom Market Reaches 200
Million Customers
Press Release -
March 19, 2007
India
has emerged as the world’s third largest telecommunications market,
behind the U.S. and China, with the total number of mobile and
landline telephone subscribers reaching 203 million at the end of last
month.
The country’s telecom sector grew 3.2% in February alone, with the net
addition of 6.3 million subscribers over the course of the month. The
vast majority of these were wireless customers, with India’s GSM and
CDMA networks adding 4.88 million and 1.35 million, respectively.
Teledensity in India reached 18% for the first time last month (that
is 18 telephones per 100 people), compared with just 12.18% in
February 2006.
These numbers are a clear illustration of the runaway growth that is
currently underway, and is expected to continue, in the Indian mobile
phone market.
