Comstar Working on Armenian WiMAX Network
Press Release - February 2, 2008
Russian telecom operator, Comstar
UTS, announced this week that it had started deploying a new mobile
broadband network in neighbouring Armenia, using WiMAX technology.
“We intend to launch the network this year and, therefore, become
the first and the largest wireless broadband Internet operator in
Armenia,” said Comstar president, Sergei Pridantsev, in a statement
Thursday. The network is expected to cover some 75% of Armenia’s
population, according to a spokesman.
Comstar has selected Airspan Networks to provide Mobile WiMAX base
stations and other equipment for the Armenian network, but did not
disclose the dollar value of this deal.
Mobile WiMAX is an emerging broadband technology, allowing for the
transmission of large amounts of data over wireless networks. Its
natural applications include wireless video and multimedia services.
