America’s leading cell phone carrier, Cingular Wireless, claims to
have carried over 500 billion minutes of network usage in 2006,
reporting a noticeable increase in minutes per subscriber.
Cingular customers now consume an average of 755 minutes of airtime
each month, the company reported, noting that the average length of a
cell phone conversation has increased by as much as 15% in some
markets. A $13 billion series of network enhancements over the past
two years is being credited for this trend.
“It’s common-sense business. If you give customers a quality product,
they’ll use it more often,” commented Cingular’s president of network
services, Ed Reynolds. “The investment we made is really paying off
for us and our customers. People have noticed the difference and are
taking full advantage of our services.”
The upgrades have given customers access to over 45,000 cell sites
throughout the United States, “resulting in a substantial reduction in
dropped and blocked calls, as well as improved voice quality,” the
company said.
