Mobile Video has High Potential but Needs Perfecting

Mobile video is hot new market with great potential in the years to come, but the combination of cell phones, broadcasting, pay-TV, satellites, and the internet will prove complicated, according to research firm, In-Stat. Mixing these technologies in an efficient and profitable way will take years of time and effort, analysts predict.
“The opportunities appear to be huge, but the current level of fragmentation in the industry, and in the markets, may make it difficult for anybody to reach the economies of scale required to make Mobile Video Services a truly worldwide phenomenon,” explained In-Stat analyst, Gerry Kaufhold. “We’re more likely to see geographic regions developing their own local approaches, and we will even find some country-specific versions.”
In-Stat predicts that in-band cellular video services, which currently deliver good video quality, will eventually run out of bandwidth in high-density geographical markets. A diverse range of technologies, including Wi-Fi and WiMAX will likely be required to provide a profitable mix of broadcast TV, premium TV, Pay-per-View, Video On Demand, and interactive multimedia features.
