DSL Startup, Xtendwave, Obtains $10 Million in Private Funding

Press Release - August 15, 2007

Denver, Colorado-based broadband startup, Xtendwave, has been granted $10 million in private funding to develop technology that will extend the reach of high-speed internet signals over copper wire telephone networks.

Xtendwave was co-founded by Mort Aaronson, a Denver tech executive who once ran wireless internet pioneer, Ricochet Networks. It already employs nearly 30 people in Dallas, Texas, and several more in Denver.

Aaronson says his company will add special computer chipsets to DSL modems and terminals, to extend broadband signals more than 20,000 feet, compared with the current average of between 4,000 and 7,000 feet.

“It’s obviously a rural play,” Aaronson said, but noted that the technology could also prove useful in some urban areas.

Now that it has obtained funding, Xtendwave must sell its idea to small telecom carriers and equipment makers around the world. The company is already in “active discussions” with Latin American phone companies, according to Aaronson.
